New InDesign CS2 Filter in SDL TRADOS 7.1

With the Release of SDL TRADOS 7.1 there is a new filter for InDesign CS2.

But this one works radically different from the “old” InDesign StoryCollectors. This was necessary because the StoryCollector Workflow had a lot of issues especially in combination with TOCs, Indexes, Hyperlinks and Bookmarks.

With the new filter you can just export an InDesign CS2 file in the “InDesign Interchange” Format (*.INX). The resulting file can then be opened directly in TagEditor. Once it is translated, it can be saved as *.INX again and be directly opened in InDesign CS2.

Using this new workflow the above mentioned issues are eliminated :)

Isn’t the resulting file extreamly huge when saving in interchange format? Will tageditor be able to hadle files of that size?

  2. Luis Lopes Says:

Thankfully this is not the case.
Using a 3MB *.indd File which would result in a 1.3MB *.isc file, you receive a 1,6Mb *.inx file.

So it is only slightly bigger. This file has the images linked to it. Which is the best practice. The files will get big if you “insert” a lot of pictures into the InDesign file.

With the huge performance increases in TagEditor that were introduced with TRADOS 7 ( i think, or was it T6.5?) this is quite fast.

  3. Daniel Says:

Sounds great, but I just did a quick test and the result was not that uplifting.

51 Mb *.indd = 0,9 MB *.isc and 19,5 *.inx.

And this file does not have the images included in the file, only the standard generated previews.
Is there something that needs to be done to the indesignfile in order to make this work?

  4. Luis Lopes Says:

What happens if you save the *.inx file as *.indd again and then export it once more as *.inx ? Does it get smaller?

Sounds weird I know, but INX usually removes alot of junk out of the InDesign file.

  5. Daniel Says:

Hey! That worked a bit better!
6 MB was the result, somehow the image previews that was included in the original inx-file was not interpreted by indesign when reopening the file. That resulted in gray-boxes and a smaller file size. Maybe this will work then!

  6. Luis Lopes Says:

    Great to hear that :)

And where is this new filter? I installed 7.1 on Feb 1, but I see only the folders for CS and 2.0 which include old plugins, which do not work with the newest Indesign (CS2). I lost a job opportunity today because I was not able to export the files.

  8. Darren Says:

You could save as inx and open in CS1 and use the old story collector. The filter for CS2 is of little use as it depends upon everyone having updated to 7.1. The old Storycollector tools enabled us (as an agency) to extract a file that would open in older versions of TagEditor. Now to achieve this we need our translators to invest in 7.1. The change from plugin to filter built in is a marketing ploy to encourage the purchase of the new version. Poacher turned gamekeeper…

  9. Tal Says:

I have a TTX file that was created from an INX file with Trados 7.1. When I open it in a lower version of Trados, I get the error “Failed to retrieve tag toolbar settings for plugin file format: Filter definition not found: TRADOS InDesign Filter 1.0.0.0″. Clicking OK gives me the error: “Filter definition not found: TRADOS InDesign Filter 1.0.0.0″. Is there a way that the person who used 7.1 to create the file can send me the filter or is there somewhere I can download it from? Thanks

  10. Alex Says:

HI. Has anyone worked with Trados 7.1 and InDesign Cs2 files?
I exported Indesing files to INX format, and I tried to open them in tag editor but I get errors (the document contains the unknown DOCTYPE declaration/root element “docu”. A tag settings file has not yet been defined for this document type. Wouldyou like to specify the settings file now?) . The system asks for a tag setting file, but the default ones do not include inx files. Should I use any DTD file?
Thank you very much for your help.

    Alex

  11. Vito Says:

I have the same problem Tal has: a ttx file, insulting me with a “Filter definition not found: TRADOS InDesign Filter 1.0.0.0″. It also chips in a message box, saying something like “can’t create a virtual Java machine, see your ini file”.

And oh yes, I am afraid I cant clean this ttx file. And I can’t verify it either – neither the new way with F8 nor the old way with S-tagger.

So … it’s fun if you dont know what to do 24 hours before the stuff is due.

  12. rene Says:

    Hi
If one can use both format INX and .ICS with tageditor, what is the difference between exporting INDD 3 files using StoryCollector to .ics and simply exporting to INX?

    thank you.

  13. Heriberto B. Says:

    Hello all,

We’ve found that the new Trados (inx) filter will work once you update your Java Runtime Environment (http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp).
It is quite a convenience to go from .indd to .inx, then to trados and then back to InDesign CS2. The only sort of big problem is that grouped objects WILL be droped at export time. Be aware that if you are grouping art with callouts and then placing these as anchored objects in your InDesign file, the callouts will not make it through for translation and the reference to those particular anchored objects will be lost.

I’m currently looking for a workaround. If anyone has a solution and wants to share I will greatly appreciate it.

    Take care and good luck,

    H.B.

  14. Heriberto B. Says:

    Hello all,

I have also found out that if you use Object Styles in InDesign to apply to graphics, callouts or text frames, these objects will be ignored by Trados as well even though InDesign exports ‘em to the INX format.

Again, it is probably those pesky tags enclosing the information and Trados probably identifies it as a graphic and ignores it.

    Anyone experiencing the same issues?
Thanks and have a great day.

Another kind of filter may help.

At the following url you can find and download a (non Trados) INX filter for TM based translation.

    http://rd.ideainst.com/en/tradobeindecs.html

TRADOBEINDECS is the name of the filter utility.

I have never tested it with docs with object styles but it is unlikely that round tripping with the filter will throw out things found in INX unless the translater leaves them out in the way.
In fact, what you do in the workflow is translating strings in INX. Perhaps harder and more complicated to work with than with Trados but it will work.

    FOR THE ISSUE:

Filter definition not found: TRADOS InDesign Filter 1.0.0.0″. Clicking OK gives me the error: “Filter definition not found: TRADOS InDesign Filter 1.0.0.0″. Is there a way that the person who used 7.1 to create the file can send me the filter or is there somewhere I can download it from?

    TRY THIS:

    Backup your idx.ttx

    Open the id.ttx in Notepad.

    Look for : Guid>TRADOS Indesign Filter 1.0.0.0</Guid

Replace TRADOS Indesign Filter WITH TRADOS InDesign Filter

    Save.

    Hope this helps.

    paul.

It happened to me exactly the same. Which DTD file is needed to work with Trados 6.5?

I’m working with InDesign CS2 and Trados 7.1 – just trying to open a converted .inx file in TagEditor and i keep getting Error 80005 about a plug in filter. Anyone have this issue and know how to fix?

    HI Ignacio and Alex,

We do have the same problem here we get the error in TAG editor (the document contains the unknown DOCTYPE declaration/root element “docu”. A tag settings file has not yet been defined for this document type. Wouldyou like to specify the settings file now?) , did you manage solving it by any chance?

    Thanks!
